HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE THE BOILS' SOUND? In only two years, you can notice various influences and interests in the sound and energy of the Boils. Though the aesthetics of the music may fluctuate, it is all rooted in the spirit of punk rock. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT "WEEKEND PUNKS?" (THE KIDS WHO ONLY SPIKE THEIR HAIR FOR SHOWS, ETC.) I really don't have time to worry about that kind of stuff. WHEN DID THE BAND FIRST GET TOGETHER, AND IS IT THE SAME LINEUP OF PEOPLE AS WHEN IT FIRST STARTED? The four piece that played together for the first record and through the first year first performed on Jan. 1st, 1995. Unfortunately, in Jan. of 1996, there was a breakdown in the relationship between myself and Amy, who shared vocal duties with me. I think the world of her, but I also think that it was necessary for both of us to move on independently of one another. Later that year, Nick, our first bassist (and Amy's brother--oh, the soap opera!), decided to leave due to the fact that every weekend was spent playing shows, and he felt he needed time to do other things. Jon, who is the original drummer (and my brother--someone should turn this into a movie), continues to play. When his schedule (school, work) gets kind of brutal, we have been known to play with Teen Idol Matt Drastic, who has played out and recorded with us. The lineup on our new 7" is actually myself, Matt, and Joel from Plow United on bass. Andrew from Philly's Dissucks filled in on bass for a while, as well, followed by Mike McKee and Dave Sausage, Philly punk vets who are both playing and recording with us. I've pretty much picked up all the vocals, although some upcoming recordings will have Areana from The Dehumanized and Those Unknown sharing vocals with me. While that is a fair number of changes, the song writing is pretty much all me, which gives our sound and style consistency. However, I would never forsake the input and playing ability of all of the good people that I have worked with. Their dedication and musicianship have all had some level of impact on what we do. I was thinking of changing our name to Crass. HAVE THE BOILS' IDEALS OR GOALS CHANGED AT ALL SINCE THE BEGINNING? I think we've grown more educated and aware. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR MAIN MUSICAL INFLUENCES? OTHER INFLUENCES? There are many things that have influenced us in some form, I couldn't begin to even list them all. DO YOU PLAY AROUND PA OFTEN? We play PA very often, it's a big state, y'know. WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE BAND TO PLAY WITH, AND WHY? Hmmm.... Violent Society. They are top notch friends and musically a kick in the ass. WHY THE DECISION TO HAVE MALE AND FEMALE VOCALS? I like the contrasting appeal, I think they are both very effective at achieving different things. It's kind of an icing on the cake unless one half is really bad. My favorite dual vocal endeavor is the Nausea Extinction EP. ANY IMMEDIATE PLANS? WHAT ARE THE PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? Immediate plans are to finish the projects at hand and to tackle a full length in late '97. On May 10th, we are recording a live CD at the Creep House with Violent Society and The Suspects. PLEASE NAME ALL OF YOUR RELEASES, AND THE LABELS THAT THEY ARE ON. Hearts of the Oppressed 7", Creep Records. Consuming Your Culture 7" (split with Sleepasaurus), Switchblade Records. Tradition Ends 7" (split with Violent Society), Schyulkill Records. Obedience is Your Obligation 7" (Goons split), Torque Records. Upcoming: "Anthems From the New Generation" on Beer City Records, a split 12" with The Bristles on Pogostick Records, plus a whole slew of comps. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE RECORD THIS WEEK? The Pogues "Red Roses For Me." They'll teach all you sorry punks what a real drinking song is. I've also been spinning an advance copy of the new Motherbox comp with The Suspects, Plow, Violent Society, Super Hi 5, FOD, The Goons, and much more. DO YOU PREFER TO PLAY WITH POP BANDS OR HARDCORE BANDS? The bad bands of either genre can get equally tiresome and generic, but I think the pop punk labels are spewing out more pre-fabricated gunk than ever before. It might just seem worse because those bands are more likely to get a response on a national level because of their crowd-friendly appeal. WHO DOES THE ART FOR YOUR POSTERS AND SINGLES? ME!ME!ME! WHAT PUBLICATION DO YOU READ THE MOST? Soldier of Fortune, Guns and Ammo, Dead Buck Weekly. OK, seriously.... The Conservative Chronicle, the Limbaugh Letter.... ARE YOU IN HIGH SCHOOL NOW? (IF NOT, WHAT, THEN?) I dropped out to worship the devil. WHAT IS YOUR OPINION OF THE TECHNOLOGICAL REVOLUTION CONCERNING THE INTERNET? I'm very ignorant of it. A guy in Philly made a web page that has our lyrics on it, I think. My friend Andrew put a picture of us playing on some page that he does. I think it's funny, kind of like TV. DO YOU PREFER 33 OR 45 RPMs, AND WHY? I don't care, as long as it's labeled. I hate it when they don't label it and it turns into a big guessing game, especially with hardcore records. WHO WOULD WIN IN A FISTFIGHT: ELVIS OR THE EASTER BUNNY? I really don't have time to worry about that kind of stuff.TO CONTACT THE BOILS, E-MAIL ME FOR THEIR ADDRESS.
